Radio frequency identification technology used to send barcodes

Business travellers will soon be checking in and entering their rooms using their mobiles and smartphones at properties owned by Starwood Hotels and Resorts. Guests using brands such as Sheraton, Le Meridien and W Hotels will use their phones instead of key cards, as barcodes are sent to their handsets using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
The move, which is part of Starwood’s efforts to upgrade its digital services, will help time-conscious business guests – as well as customers them the ability to play games and movies in their rooms.
