People pay more to stay in interesting neighbourhoods, investor says

Amadeus has announced investment in a new start-up, Avuxi, which claims it will be able to rank the popularity of every hotspot in every destination in the world.

Location is everything, the travel tech giant says, adding that 90% of people booking travel are willing to pay more to stay in a more interesting neighbourhood.

Business and leisure travellers increasingly want to find the most interesting area of the city they’re visiting, the most loved restaurant or a cool new bar. But without a local friend it can be hard to distinguish tourist traps from the real thing.

Avuxi, aims to rank the popularity of every place on Earth, so travellers can find the best places to visit while they book their hotel and flight. The London- and Barcelona-based company is the latest start-up to benefit from an Amadeus Ventures investment, following for example a venture into virtual reality announced earlier this year.

“Whenever we talk about travelling, location is essential. What we tried to do with Amadeus is to help people save time and have a better and more personalised experience by having the bookings and the information on the same site,” explains Alexis Batlle, the start-up’s chief executive.

Heat map overlays
Avuxi’s technology, which it calls TopPlace, shows the most popular areas within a city through “easy to understand” heat map overlays, so travellers searching for a hotel in an online travel agency or metasearch site can intuitively understand the most popular places.

It also lists scores and assigns a location ranking to each place of accommodation according to how close it is to eating, shopping, nightlife and sightseeing, so foodies can look for hotels near a city’s top areas for restaurants, and fashionistas in the shopping district.
