Jaan Albrecht proposed to take over at troubled Austrian Airlines

Jaan Albrecht, CEO of Star Alliance Services, has been proposed by the executive board of Lufthansa to become chairman of the board and CEO of Austrian Airlines as of November 1. Austrian is a loss-making subsidiary of Lufthansa. Austrian Airlines Group posted a 2011 first-half operating loss of €63.1 million ($89.8 million), after which its former CEO announced his resignation as chief executive. Albrecht’s nomination will be considered by the airline’s supervisory board at its next meeting in September. He has been at the helm of the Star airline alliance, based in Frankfurt, Germany, since 2001.
As a consequence of the new announcement, the chief executive board of Star Alliance has engaged in an executive search process. Until the nomination of a successor, Albrecht will remain in charge of leading Star Alliance’s programmes and activities.
