Spain tourism smashes records in 2015

Country could see record 68 million tourists this year
The number of tourist arrivals in Spain rose to a record high of 8.8 million in July, up 6.3% from the same month in 2014. Spain continues to benefit from security fears in competing destinations, as well as a weaker euro.
The July figure brings the total for the first seven months of 2015 to nearly 38 million – another record high – up 4.7% from the same period last year.
Spain welcomed more Nordic, French and British tourists this year and also saw more arrivals from distant markets such as the USA, South Korea, China and Japan. The country could see a record 68 million tourists overall in 2015.
Tourism is proving to be a boost to the country’s economic recovery, as the sector makes up about 11% of national economic output. However, Spain still suffers from 22.4% unemployment.
Some in the travel trade are warning that Spain must shift away from relying on cheap beach travel packages as it tries to raise tourists’ average spending.
