List is welcome after global attention on border ID checks
Sweden’s Skåne region has been rated the ninth best place in the world for travel by the New York Times in its list of the 52 coolest places to visit in 2016.
The widely read newspaper’s list has gone viral since it was published on Friday – welcome news following all the global media attention so far this year on border ID checks for travel over the area’s famous Öresund Bridge.
Skåne is home to “some of the Nordic region’s most interesting food”, the article says, especially the 25-seat restaurant Daniel Berlin Krog, run by a chef of the same name.
The region has “almost mythologically Swedish” nature, “mushroom-filled forests” and an “unadulterated coastline”. But the weather can be “rough”.
Skåne is reported to be catching up with nearby Copenhagen’s famous restaurants. Last February, three restaurants in Malmö were given a Michelin star. Nordic Noir TV shows The Bridge and Wallander were both filmed in the region, achieving worldwide audiences.
The Danish city of Aarhus was also mentioned in the NYT list, coming 13th.
