Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, left Seychelles this morning to represent President James Michel at the inauguration on Friday, January 31, of Umea of Sweden as the European Capital of Culture in the presence of H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria and H.R.H. Prince Daniel and the County Governor Magdalena Andersson and her husband Goran Karlsson.

Seychelles enjoys friendly relations with the royal family of Sweden, and the City of Umea has been working closely with the Department of Culture and assisting the School of Music with staff training and with needed equipment for the school. The city of Umea has also been working with La Digue on an annual basis on an exchange students program.

Minister St.Ange is also expected to be received at the Vasterbottens Museum and at an Arts Campus before attending a vernissage exhibition by Enrique Martinez Celayas. Minister Alain St.Ange will also be guest of County Governor Magdalena Andersson and her husband, Goran Karlsson, at a dinner at the Governor`s residence of Umea in the presence of H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria and H.R.H. Prince Daniel.

He is also expected to meet the Swedish Minister for Culture and Sports and the Mayor of Umea.

It is now accepted that within the last couple of years, culture has taken a more important role in the marketing of Seychelles and in pushing the islands as an events-based destination instead of the traditional sun, sea and sand approaches of the past.
