Jakarta rocked by suspected Islamist attack
Up to six blasts and exchanges of gunfire have caused chaos in the centre of the Indonesian capital Jakarta today, with four suspected attackers among six people killed and others seriously injured.
The attacks took place around Thamrin Street, a popular area for tourists, shopping, cafés and embassies as well as offices belonging to the United Nations. At least one blast hit a Starbucks café next to the Sarinah shopping mall.
Armoured cars, heavily armed police and snipers were deployed to take control of the streets. According to police, two attackers blew themselves up at a police post outside Starbucks and the other two were shot by police.
Islamist militant groups are believed to be behind the attack. Up to 200 Indonesians are thought to have gone to Syria to fight with so-called Islamic State, many of whom have since returned.
