USA and Cuba reach “understanding” on restoring regular flights
The US and Cuba have reached an understanding on restoring regular scheduled flights between the two countries. A deal is likely to be announced officially within days.
However, further negotiations on the specifics of when flights can start, and by which airlines, could take months.
At the moment, Cuban and American travellers must rely on charter flights, enduring frustrating bureaucracy and strict baggage control. Yet travel between the US and Cuba has surged by around 50% in 2015. Many hotels and hostels are booked for months ahead.
The move follows the US reopening its embassy in Havana in August after a 54-year absence. Flights are one of several issues that should eventually get the US to lift its trade embargo on Cuba.
