Nordic chain to operate The Mayor from next March

Scandic Hotels has signed a long-lease agreement with property owner Evars Hoteller to take over the hotel The Mayor in the Danish city of Aarhus, which is currently a Best Western property.

Formerly known as the Aarhus Plaza and run by Scandic between 1999 and 2014, the building has a “premium location” encircled by the city’s Music Hall, City Hall and City Hall Park.

“Besides Copenhagen, Aarhus is the most important region in Denmark for us and taking over The Mayor is both exciting and strategically important,” says Jens Mathiesen, managing director of Scandic Denmark.

“The stronger market and extensive renovations that have been made, together with our experience and knowledge from operating this hotel, means this will be a very [easy] addition to our portfolio.”

Scandic plans to take over the operations of The Mayor on March 1, 2018. It will have 162 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a relaxation area.

Ongoing renovations
Since Scandic ceased its operations in 2014, the hotel has undergone extensive renovation and in connection with the new lease agreement, Scandic and the property owner have agreed on continued renovations focusing on rooms, bathrooms and ground floor.

Scandic is the leading hotel operator in the region with two hotels in the city. On May 11, the municipality of Aarhus announced that the project group, in which Scandic participated as the operator, won an agreement for a new congress hotel in the port area.
