Load factor for the month rises to 82.9%

SAS has reported its “highest August load factor ever”, an increase of 2.4 percentage points to 82.9%. The airline carried a total of 2.6 million passengers in August, up 9.1%, in figures just reported.

Load factor is the ratio of revenue passenger kilometres to available seat kilometres and is used to assess how efficiently a transport provider fills seats and generates revenue.

Total traffic (RPK) increased by 6.3% during the month, while total capacity (ASK) was up by 3.2%. The airline said that market conditions remained challenging, but since the introduction of the summer 2014 program it stressed that load factors had improved.

Yield and PASK (passenger revenue per available seat per kilometre) were down 10.7% and 8.6%, respectively, in July, and in August they are expected to remain negative, “but not as negative as in July 2014”.

During the summer months, SAS opened 35 new mostly seasonal routes. These contributed to a positive traffic development in August and a scheduled passenger growth of 9.2%. Intercontinental routes developed as expected, the airline said, with load factor above 90% and traffic growth of 2.1%, primarily driven by a positive development on US routes.

Domestic routes grew by 3.9%, the growth reported to be strongest in the Norwegian and Danish domestic markets.
