Safest – and least safe – airlines named

SAS, Finnair and Lufthansa among the world’s safest
Safety and product ratings website Airline Ratings has named its top 20 safest airlines, ten safest low-cost airlines and ten least safe carriers for 2017, out of 425 it monitors.
Top of the list for the fourth year is Qantas, which maintains a fatality-free record. The rest of the top 20 are, in alphabetical order: Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia.
The top ten safest low-cost airlines are, in alphabetical order: Aer Lingus, Flybe, HK Express, Jetblue, Jetstar Australia, Jetstar Asia, Thomas Cook, Virgin America, Vueling and Westjet.
Of the airlines surveyed, 148 have the top seven-star safety ranking. But almost 50 have three stars or less, including 14 with just one star, based in Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal and Surinam. The ten worst are: Batik Air, Bluewing, Citilink, Kal-Star Aviation, Lion Air, Sriwijaya Air, TransNusa, Trigana Air Service, Wings Air and Xpress Air.
