Calendars raised money for charity but caused controversy
Ryanair says it is scrapping its calendar of bikini-wearing cabin crew. Michael O’Leary, the budget airline’s chief executive, has told Irish radio station Today FM that the calendar will not be published for 2015.
The calendars, which were first published in 2008, raised money for charity but caused no end of controversy. The UK’s Advertising Standards Agency argued that “sexually suggestive” adverts featuring women in underwear were likely to cause “widespread offence”. Ads for the product were banned in Malaga, Spain, last year for being “discriminatory”.
O’Leary said the idea for the calendars came from employees, telling website AOL: “I think it was a great idea by the cabin crew. It genuinely did raise huge amounts of money for charity and we will struggle to replace it with something as good or as successful.”
