Irish pilots join colleagues in Germany and Italy, and more may too

Irish pilots working for Ryanair have voted for a strike to take place on December 20. It is the latest in a wave of strikes that have been planned by the budget airline’s employees.

A majority of the 84 Ryanair-employed members of the union the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association backed industrial action in a secret ballot.

Ryanair’s largest base is London Stansted, but it is headquartered in Dublin where it has 360 pilots based, and this Irish strike will probably disrupt flights during the Christmas period.

Ryanair pilots in Italy and Germany have already voted to strike for four hours on December 15, from 13:00 to 17:00. Italian pilots working for Vueling and Alitalia will also take part, as will air traffic controllers.

Germany too
German pilots, meanwhile, say that a Ryanair strike “can be expected at any time”, though it promises to avoid striking from December 23 to 26. But a walkout before that would have a run-on effect as planes and crew would find themselves in the wrong places.

Ryanair has 87 bases in Europe, and pilots at all of them are campaigning for better conditions. The airline has tried to placate them by offering pay rises, but less than a third of the bases have accepted.
