Ryanair CEO: Seatbelts “don’t matter”

“You don’t need a seatbelt on trains travelling at 120mph”

In his latest bid to get standing-room only areas on his aircraft, Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary, says that seatbelts on planes are pointless. He previously tried to lobby for standing room areas in 2009. Now, in an interview with the UK’s Daily Telegraph, he says that planes are just buses with wings, adding that “if there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seatbelt won’t save you.”
He then elaborates: “You don’t need a seatbelt on the London Underground. You don’t need a seatbelt on trains which are travelling at 120mph – and if they crash you’re all dead.”
Ryanair wants to remove the last ten rows of seats from his aircraft, making them standing room only for a price of £1 (€1.25).
