Ryanair angers with wave of cancellations

LCC cancels 40 to 50 flights a day so staff can go on holiday
Hundreds of thousands of Ryanair passengers are likely to lose their flights as the low-cost carrier tries to improve punctuality and tackle a backlog of staff leave.
Passengers are already furious over ruined travel and holiday plans, many of them taking to social media to vent their fury. Around 300,000 journeys may be affected.
Ryanair says it will cancel 40 to 50 flights a day for the next six weeks. It is changing its internal calendar, which had contributed to the backlog, so it can increase holiday allowances for pilots and cabin crew.
The airline says the move is designed to improve punctuality, which fell below 80% in the first two weeks of September.
“We have operated a record schedule (and traffic numbers) during the peak summer months of July and August but must now allocate annual leave to pilots and cabin crew in September and October (while still running the bulk of our summer schedule),” it explains.
“This increased leave at a time of ATC capacity delays and strikes has severely reduced our on-time performance over the past two weeks to under 80%. By cancelling less than 2% of our flying programme over the next six weeks (until our winter schedule starts in early November), we can improve the operational resilience of our schedules and restore punctuality to our annualised target of 90%.”
Customer Denis Mahon, who works for Irish broadcaster 3News, spoke for many when he tweeted: “Ridiculous from @Ryanair. Cancel a flight at 2 days’ notice – only offer a flight for 3 days later! Holiday plans up in smoke. Thanks a bunch.”
