UK’s Advertising Standards Authority reacts belatedly
Ads run by the low-cost airline Ryanair in which it mocks the flagging fortunes of tour operator giant Thomas Cook have been banned in the UK. The country’s Advertising Standards Authority said it had received multiple complaints about the ads, which were published late last year in several national and local newspapers featuring text in big letters stating “Bye bye Thomas Cook” followed by: “Ryanair – guaranteed to keep flying this Christmas”.
Ryanair argued that the ads “simply referred to using already published newspaper headlines” and that they “did not mock Thomas Cook’s financial difficulties”. It added, that they “drew consumers’ attention to Ryanair’s financial security, as opposed to Thomas Cook’s financial problems”.
