Russian airports ban all carry-on liquids

Tight luggage restrictions ahead of Winter Olympics

All liquids, regardless of volume, are now banned in carry-on luggage at Russian airports. The country’s transport ministry announced the new rule, effective since Saturday, as Russia tightens security ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The 2014 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held on February 6 to 23. With a budget now exceeding $51 billion, they will be the most expensive winter Olympics in history.

Two Moscow airports, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo, banned liquids immediately after Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, published initial recommendations on January 8. Now all airports have done so.

Exceptions are possible for medicine and baby food, but airport security has permission to check them. Passengers will have to prove they really need the medication during the flight.
