Beaches and communities face damage from rising seas and storms

Tourism will be affected as rising sea levels erode the Californian coastline. Coastal communities whose economies are based on tourism are facing increasing damage from the rising sea and from storms as beaches and properties are swept away.
A new study commissioned by the state of California says that beaches will be eroded and narrowed, making them less attractive to tourists and wildlife. “You lose beach size and you lose tourism,” says the study’s author. If the Pacific rises 55 inches by 2100, as scientists predict, beaches in Malibu for example would lose half a billion dollars in tourism spending and tax revenue.
