Taylor Swift helps city to reach out to millennials
New York City reported a 4% rise in visitor numbers in 2014, with 56.4 million people taking a trip to the Big Apple. The figure is an improvement on the 55.8 million arrivals projected in summer 2014.
Visitors generated a record $61.3 billion in overall economic impact, supporting 359,000 tourism-related jobs and $21 billion in wages. The city’s hotel sector reached 102,000 hotel rooms, while selling a record 32.4 million total hotel room nights.
“Our excellent quality of life, low levels of crime and constant dynamism continue to attract record tourism each year, and 2014 was no exception,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
As previously reported, New York tourism organisation NYC & Company recruited Taylor Swift last year as a global ambassador for the city, a move inspired by the pop star’s song “Welcome to New York”.
“Taylor has one of the largest social media presences in the world, and she has a huge millennial following, which is very important to us,” NYC & Company president and CEO Fred Dixon told TTG at 2014’s WTM. “They can be difficult to reach in an authentic way and she does that for us. It’s something money just can’t buy.”
