Lufthansa joins Emirates in calling for airline security summit

The most likely explanation for the tragic destruction of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 over eastern Ukraine is that pro-Russian separatists in control of the region shot it down “by mistake,” not realising it was a civilian flight, US intelligence officials said on Tuesday.

According to this “most plausible explanation”, the separatists fired a Russian-made SA-11 (Buk) missile mistaking the aircraft for another kind of plane, the officials speaking on condition of anonymity told the Reuters news agency.

“Five days in […] it does appear to be a mistake,” one of them said.

They supported their assessment with evidence from social media and the intercepted conversations of known separatists whose voice prints have been verified by US agencies.

At the weekend, in a rare case of agreement between the two airlines, Lufthansa joined Emirates in calling for an airline summit to discuss how the industry should respond to the incident. International security protocols must be reviewed, they said, and governments around the world must review how to assess whether airspace is safe.

The shooting down of Malaysia Airlines MH17 over Ukraine killed of 298 passengers and crew. Black boxes from the wreckage were finally given to Malaysian experts by separatists early on Tuesday.
