Qatar Airways signs deal covering tournaments until 2022
Qatar Airways will take the place of its Middle Eastern rival Emirates to sponsor two World Cup football championships until 2022, signing a deal with the sport’s global governing body FIFA to that effect.
The state-owned Doha-based carrier will be FIFA’s official partner and airline for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and 2022 World Cup in Qatar – the first time the tournament will be held in the Middle East, and in an Arab and majority-Muslim country.
The deal gives Qatar Airways marketing and branding rights at both events, with an expected audience of more than two billion people for each tournament. The value of the deal, which also covers this year’s Confederations Cup, has not been disclosed.
The previous contract with Emirates lasted from 2006 until 2014, when the airline refused to renew it after FIFA faced corruption allegations.
