Further strikes will not be called during negotiations
German pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit says it will resume salary talks with Lufthansa this week, during which further strikes will not be called. Options such as mediation are also on the table.
The row over contracts between the two side dates back to 2012, with walkouts since then costing the airline hundreds of millions of euros and damage to its reputation. The latest round of strikes over six days in November cost it €100 million.
Lufthansa wants to make pay more flexible and update pension schemes, especially as it expands low-cost operations like its subsidiary Eurowings.
Chief executive Carsten Spohr spoke to pilots last week during a meeting that was webcast to staff. The union had criticised him for not playing a bigger role in the negotiations.
