Nearly 50% of pilots say they sleep in the cockpit
Two incidents have come to light where pilots fell asleep while in the air, even though they were the only ones flying the plane. A report issued by the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority says that the pilots were likely suffering from fatigue. One first officer fell asleep when the captain left to use the toilet. In a similar incident, a pilot returning from a break had to shake his co-pilot awake. The identities of the pilots and the airlines have not been revealed.
Shockingly, nearly 50% of pilots confess to sleeping in the cockpit while on duty, according to a new survey by the British Airlines Pilots Association. One third of these add that the other pilot was also asleep when they woke up.
