Phuket to get its own light rail system?

Line to connect with Phuket International Airport

As an option being considered to ease traffic congestion on the popular Thai tourist destination of Phuket, the island’s authorities are planning a light rail system.

According to a report in the Bangkok Post, the light rail system comprises 20 stations across its entire 60km length and connects with Phuket International Airport. Development would cost around 24 billion baht (€650 million), Phuket’s governor Nisit Chansomwong was quoted as saying.

The project has already been green-lighted in three public hearings. If the budget for the light rail system’s development is approved it will be completed in 2021.
