Passengers can hack into flight controls: report

Flight controls could be reached via wireless entertainment system
Commercial aircraft could be hacked in flight by passengers using the wireless entertainment system to access the flight controls, a US watchdog agency warns in a new report. On-board firewalls protecting avionics from hackers could be breached if the same system is used.
The danger is one of several cybersecurity weaknesses identified by the US Government Accountability Office in the report addressed to the Federal Aviation Administration.
“Internet connectivity in the cabin should be considered a direct link between the aircraft and the outside world, which includes potential malicious actors,” the report says.
FAA Administrator Michael Huerta agreed. He said he had started work with security experts on how to correct the weaknesses.
“This threat will continue to evolve and it is something that needs to be at the forefront of our thinking,” he told a Senate panel.
