Paris tourist area hit in new attack

Police officer and gunman die on Champs-Élysées
The sound of gunshots rang out in the centre of Paris once again last night, as an attacker believed to have been inspired by Islamic State killed a policeman and wounded others on the Champs-Élysées.
The gunman, aged 39, who had a prison record, was also killed. He had been under preliminary investigation for terrorism but was “let go”, raising questions over how another extremist known to police could bring terror to the French capital.
He suddenly opened fire with a Kalashnikov on a police car parked on the Champs-Élysées, hitting at least two officers. He was shot dead as he fled. Police are now making searches at addresses east of Paris.
Reports say that initial shots were heard next to or inside a branch of the shopping chain Marks & Spencer, in one of the world’s most famous shopping areas.
The shooting comes just days before the first round of France’s presidential election, in which at least one candidate backs the deportation of all known terror suspects.
