Elon Musk’s Hyperloop backed by Norway party
A vacuum train between Oslo and Copenhagen has been backed by Norway’s climate-friendly Green Party, which wants US innovator Elon Musk’s Hyperloop transport concept to be up and running between the two cities within 20 years.
The party won strong support for the idea at its annual conference in Lillehammer at the weekend.
Hyperloop is only at the design stage but is due to be tested in Dubai in the near future, with the first line scheduled to be operational in the United Arab Emirates in 2020.
The Green Party, which won 4.2% of the vote in Norway’s 2015 elections, hopes that a link between Oslo and Copenhagen will be open by 2037.
The technology is based on the principle of a train travelling at the speed of sound through an airtight tube, saving both time and energy.
It has been calculated that a Hyperloop could zoom the 560km between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 35 minutes, with an average speed of 970 kilometres per hour. The distance between Oslo and Copenhagen is around 480 kilometres, which a Hyperloop could do in 29 minutes.
