Festival of art, music and food kicks off in coastal city
Over the next ten days, the popular Danish coastal city of Aarhus will be hosting its annual festival with cultural events focused on urban art, gastronomy and music attracting more than 300,000 visitors.
Every street, club, stage, gallery and museum will swarm with art and entertainment, the organisers promise, as “renowned traditions flourish side by side with the new and unexpected”.
Aarhus Festival has been an annual event for over 50 years and has grown into one of the biggest cultural events in Scandinavia, showcasing local, national and international artists. The food part of the festival alone attracts over 30,000 people and 250 participants.
It has HM Queen Margrethe ll as a patron, from 1965 as a crown princess and from 1970 as queen. She officially opens each year’s festival.
One of the most innovative attractions this year is Bâtiment by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich, a large-scale installation consisting of a mock-up building façade turned on its side with a multi-storey mirror. Visitors can view themselves in a gravity-defying illusion where they are hanging off the elevation of a three-level house.
This year the festival takes place from August 26 to September 4. Dates for the next two festivals are August 25 to September 3, 2017, and August 31 to September 9, 2018.
