Lifeboat crashes into sea during safety exercise
An accident on board the world’s biggest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas, has killed one crew member and critically injured four others. The incident happened during a routine safety exercise.
A lifeboat with five crew inside became detached from the fifth deck, falling 10 metres into the sea during a stopover in Marseille. A 42-year-old Filipino died and three other Filipinos and an Indian man also fell, two of them suffering life-threatening injuries.
Royal Caribbean confirmed the death on Twitter. “We’re keeping our colleagues and their families in our thoughts and prayers,” it said.
Harmony of the Seas is 362 metres long, the same as four football pitches end-to-end and longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower. It can hold more than 8,000 passengers and crew and began sailing in May.
