Base officially opens in Spain’s second largest city

Norwegian has opened its new crew base in Barcelona – a base the airline says is important to its international growth. Barcelona will be strategically important for the company’s future long-haul plans.

This is the carrier’s sixth base in Spain, along with Madrid, Alicante, Malaga, Las Palmas and Tenerife. Norwegian also has bases in the Nordic countries as well as the UK, the USA and Thailand.

“There’s been a high demand for non-stop flights to and from Spain’s second largest city,” Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos said. “Barcelona is also strategically important for us as we are considering the airport for future long-haul operations.”

From March to October this year, Norwegian expects to fly around 700,000 passengers in and out of Barcelona. In the same period last year, it flew 490,000 pax in and out of the city. This means a passenger increase of 40%.

Norwegian is offering four new routes and has increased frequencies on existing routes from April 2014. The new routes are to Barcelona from Sandefjord Torp, Hamburg, Berlin and Warsaw, while increased frequencies are on the routes from Stockholm (13 weekly flights), Helsinki (daily) and London (daily).
