Pilots and crew go from behind a bar to behind bars
A court in Norway has sentenced a Latvian pilot working for airBaltic to 10 months in prison. The pilot and his crew failed blood alcohol tests at Oslo Airport before a flight last month.
The pilot, who has since been fired by the airline, was convicted of endangering air traffic safety. The prosecution had been demanding a full year behind bars.
When tested on August 7 together with three other crew members, following an anonymous tip-off to police, the pilot had a blood alcohol level of 0.54 parts per thousand, compared with Norway’s legal limit of 0.2 parts per thousand.
Three other employees have already been sentenced. Two female cabin crew were given 45-day and 60-day jail terms. The co-pilot is appealing against his six-month sentence.
