Workshop aims to strengthen cruise excursions in Arctic region

A workshop opened by Cruise Northern Norway & Svalbard and aimed at bolstering cruise companies’ shore excursions in Norway’s Arctic region has taken place involving cruise line executives from TUI Cruises, Silversea, Fred Olsen, RCCL UK, Thomson, Carnival UK and Cruise & Maritime Services. The Cruise Norway workshop was held aboard Hurtigruten’s Kong Harald vessel between Hammerfest and Tromso.
“We are currently getting around 15-16% of cruise calls into Norway and we want to grow our market share and encourage the cruise ships visiting the country to spread their calls to all ports,” Erik Joachimsen, Cruise Northern Norway & Svalbard’s managing director, said.
A representative of the port of Brønnøysund said that excursions to Torghatten mountain and Vega fishing village had been popular with cruise visitors, while Bodø, the first port inside the Arctic Circle, will host its first Christmas cruise this year. Tours on Lofoten Island include hiking, kayaking, cod fishing, whale watching and sea eagle safaris.
