Six-storey Skihallen to contain 36,000 square meters of snow
The world’s biggest indoor ski centre has just got the go-ahead. It will be built about 10 minutes’ drive from Oslo.
The six-storey Skihallen will contain 36,000 square meters of snow, a slope 505 meters long and more than 100 meters wide, five ski lifts, three runs and a capacity for 5,000 skiers an hour. That beats Snowworld in the Netherlands, which has 35,000 square metres of the white stuff.
“This is more than a ski centre,” proclaimed Kjetil Fladmark-Larsen, chief executive of Lorensburg Winter Park, to Norway broadcaster TV2. “We are going to build a hotel, apartments, a winter academy and shops. It will be a destination.”
The green light follows four years of engineering and planning. The centre will also house an indoor cross-country ski track with space for up to 1,000 people at one time. Construction will start before the end of the year.
“We’re moving the snow to town – all year round,” Fladmark-Larsen enthused. “Children and young people will be able to combine skiing and school. This is the future training centre for winter sports athletes.”
