Vast majority of Denmark’s beaches and lakes of excellent quality
The vast majority of Denmark’s beaches and lakes are of excellent quality, the European Environment Agency says, with almost 86% of its bathing waters of the highest standard.
The agency’s annual State of Bathing Waters report shows 85.9% of bathing waters in Denmark were of an excellent quality in 2016. Finland also fared very well, Sweden slightly less well, while Norway was not measured. An interactive map, where you can zoom in to see the quality of individual beaches and lakes around Europe, can be seen here.
“Denmark may not be able to boast that it has the most stable summer weather, but we are a bathing water superpower when it comes to water quality along our coasts,” said Rasmus Moes of the environmental protection agency. “You are pretty much guaranteed a fantastic bathing experience – wherever you might be in the country.”
Denmark has countless islands and the 16th longest coastline in the world. Water quality is improving each year, and in 2016, nine new beaches were given top marks. In total, almost 97% of the country’s bathing areas meet the EU’s minimum criteria for bathing water quality.
