Airports are catching up with Copenhagen
Copenhagen’s Kastrup airport is still Scandinavia’s busiest – but other important hubs in the Nordic region are slowly catching up.
CPH saw around 14 million passengers in the first half of 2017, up 2.3% on the same period last year. But both Oslo’s Gardemoen, Stockholm’s Arlanda and Helsinki all saw increases that were nearer 9%, to 13.2 million, 12.8 million and just over 9 million, respectively.
There are two reasons behind Copenhagen’s more measured increase – people from southern Sweden are avoiding it due to the temporary ID and border controls causing delays on the Öresund Bridge, while construction work at the airport occasionally causes problems, Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan writes.
Unsurprisingly, given the ongoing boom in visitors flying to and via Iceland, Reykjavik’s Keflavík saw the biggest increase, as much as 46.7%, to 3.6 million passengers, making it the Nordics’ fifth busiest airport. It has now passed Gothenburg’s Landvetter with 3.2 million.

  1. SAS is helping CPH with their statistics by routing many passengers from ARN and OSL to fly via CPH and charging them landing fee both in CPH and their destination.
