World’s greenest and least green airlines revealed
A new study has revealed the most and least polluting airlines around the globe. Top of the table of the greenest carriers is Finnair, while SAS is placed fourth.
TAP, easyJet and Virgin Australia also feature highly in the list, while the biggest polluters are three major US airlines. However, the study collected data for just 20 airlines because releasing carbon emissions information in the industry is “entirely voluntary”.
Conducted by the UK’s Warwick Business School, the research monitored the airlines’ carbon emissions over a seven-year period.
“Finnair performs best due to the age and type of its planes, the routes it flies and the overall number of connections it offers,” the business school’s Dr Frederik Dahlmann explained. “Plus it is probably among the most advanced when it comes to accounting for and managing its emissions over time.”
One cause of concern is the fact that most carriers’ CO2 emissions do not seem to be declining at all, despite steps taken by the industry to improve its environmental performance. In many cases, emissions are increasing.
