Ministry: Story circulating on social media is “fake news”
A story circulating on social media claiming that Germany has issued a travel warning for Sweden has been dismissed by the German Foreign Ministry as “fake news”.
Facebook pages linked to the far-right party Alternative for Germany posted a link to the ministry’s travel information on Sweden claiming that “a massive travel warning” was issued on March 1.
But the ministry says there was never any such travel warning for Sweden.
It said it was possible that the far-right party was using an update to travel advice for Sweden in March 2016, lowering its terror threat level there from ‘high threat’ to ‘elevated threat’. These threat levels are set by the Swedish National Centre for Terrorist Threat Assessment.
Germany’s travel advice for Sweden has in fact changed only once since January – a warning about alcohol consumption in public.
