Two years of new investigations bring no evidence
Two years of new investigations have yielded no evidence that the disastrous April 1990 fire on the ferry Scandinavian Star that killed 159 people was deliberate.
Norwegian police will therefore not file any new indictments in the case, according to press reports.
This is despite the fact that earlier this year, a retired Danish ship inspector claimed that the fire was sabotage as part of an insurance scam. He said crew members were responsible for the fires that broke out on the ship.
The owners of Scandinavian Star are said to have received $14 million in compensation after the fires.
But in the new investigation of the tragedy, which occurred as the ship sailed from Oslo to Frederikshavn in Denmark, fire experts said that subsequent fires were sparked by the original one.
