Finnair considers wider alliance role

CEO: “We have been going through a struggle for survival”

The CEO of struggling Finnair says that the Finnish carrier could become a part of a wider alliance or to restructure within an alliance. The airline is already part of oneworld, but has been making annual losses since 2008. Finland’s government could also sell part of its majority 55.8% stake. The airline is fighting weak profitability by cutting costs and focusing on its money-making Asian routes.
“We have been going through a struggle for survival,” Mika Vehvilainen confirms to the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. “The idea that we would be independent is not necessarily the only option. Within alliances there may be a different kind of restructuring to strengthen the cooperation.”
