Lufthansa will do more to inject large-scale investments so it can offer more perks to passengers, CEO Christoph Franz says in a letter to employees, distributed at the weekend and quoted by the magazine Der Spiegel on Sunday. “High passenger numbers and seat load factors unfortunately say nothing about what remains in our coffers at the end of the day,” he writes. “And what’s there is still not enough to shoulder the investments we need to keep an edge as premium airline in the future.”
The letter says that the airline is pledging €3 billion to improve the “product experience” for passengers. Moreover, the letter, which was co-signed by passenger business chief Carsten Spohr, adds that recently rivals have “at least caught up” with Lufthansa in certain areas because the German airline has not always been true to the brand’s quality standards.
