There’s plenty to experience when summer extends within the Arctic Circle, according to the travel publisher Lonely Planet. The Finnish lakelands are the perfect conditions for nutritious cloudberries to flourish. Little known outside northern Europe, these tiny, orange-gold berries stay ripe for only three weeks from late July. They can be made into jam or served fresh with leipäjuusto cheese. There’s also a cloudberry festival in Ranua, where visitors can also enjoy “the excellent Ranua Zoo to get up close to Arctic wildlife”.
Other activities listed include getting up close to traditional Sami culture, learning about it for example at Rovaniemi’s Arktikum museum; taking a long-distance hike through the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park staying at wilderness cabins along the way; and experiencing Rovaniemi’s nightlife and restaurants.
