All people on board a Dana Air passenger aircraft have been killed as it struck residential area in Nigeria's main city of Lagos. The Boeing MD-83 aircraft was flying from the Nigerian capital, Abuja, with 153 people on board.
It is not yet known how many people were killed on the ground, although the main residential building the plane collided with initially was probably empty. However, the surrounding Iju neighbourhood, just to the north of the airport, is densely populated. The cause of the disaster is not yet known. Rescue services rushed to the scene to search the rubble for survivors, joined by thousands of onlookers.
Dana Air has a reputation for being on schedule. However, this is the fourth major air disaster to claim more than 100 lives in 10 years.
