The Spanish airline Iberia has been forced to pay £10,000 in compensation to a family (€12,350) stranded during the ash-cloud crisis in 2010. But it helped that the father of the family, Phillip Marshall, is one of the UK’s top commercial litigation lawyers.
At the time of the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, the family was en route from a holiday in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands to London via Madrid. An Iberia employee advised them to make their own way home and the family spent the next four days on trains and hiring cars. Yet a flight became available the following day. Iberia refunded the cost of the cancelled flights to London, but refused to give them the costs of the four-day journey.
