The parent companies of the European aircraft manufacturer ATR say they are interested in developing a bigger turboprop at some point in the future. EADS and Finmeccanica add that they may bring new partners into the project. The new fuel-saving aircraft type will likely have 90 seats, and discussions on defining the product are taking place with around 20 airlines.
“We and EADS are closely examining the business case for such a new project,” Giuseppe Orsi, Finmeccanica’s chairman and CEO, said during a ceremony marking the delivery of the 1,000th ATR, to be operated by Spanish regional airline Air Nostrum. “We want ATR to remain at the very top of the market, ahead of current and future competitors.”
