The new owner of bmibaby, IAG, says that the low-cost carrier will be grounded from September with the loss of around 500 jobs. The East Midlands-based airline is bleeding losses of €30 million a year. Some routes will stop as early as June.
IAG failed to find a buyer for bmibaby, which it bought together with bmi from Lufthansa. Meanwhile, bmi is being integrated into the mainstream operations of British Airways. IAG says that another airline it acquired when it bought bmi, Aberdeen-based Regional, has a better chance of being sold.
