Airline execs sentenced for 2005 crash

Three executives and an engineer sentenced for Greek disaster

A second ruling has been given in the role of three executives of the former Cypriot airline Helios Airways and a British engineer in Greece’s worst-ever air accident. More than 120 people were killed when the oxygen supply failed on the airline’s Boeing 737-300, which crashed into a mountain near Athens in 2005. The pilots and most of the passengers had fallen unconscious.
The four were sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison after an Athens court found them guilty of manslaughter and negligence. They are appealing against the decision. It comes four months after a court in Cyprus acquitted the three executives in a separate hearing.
