In Kjugekull, a popular scenic area for hiking and “bouldering” near Kristianstad, a family outing became a horror story for the Högberg family after son Leo, aged three, accidentally tumbled into a tight crack in the rock. As the hours passed, the evening drew in and the temperature dropped, emergency services tried to reach him unsuccessfully. At one point, they tried lowering a rope to the boy, who reached it but panicked when his head got stuck in the crevice.
Eventually, a slim passing climber, David Crawley – an Irish national living in Malmö – was able to dangle upside down while emergency services staff held his feet. He succeeded in attaching a hook to Leo’s clothes.
