As a further step in what it calls its “African strategy”, Star Alliance has admitted Ethiopian Airlines as its 28th member airline – the third carrier from Africa in the alliance. SAS was already a partner of Ethiopian Airlines, code-sharing on the Stockholm-Rome-Addis Ababa route. The joining ceremony was held yesterday at Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport. With the addition of Ethiopian Airlines, the Star Alliance network now covers the continent’s commercial and political cities, particularly in East, Central and West Africa.
Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht explained that “with Ethiopian Airlines now part of the Star Alliance network, we offer our customers the widest choice of flights connecting to, from and within Africa, a region of the world in which air travel is enjoying steady growth rates.”
