New warning for tourists visiting Egypt

Visitors should avoid political rallies and marches

As presidential elections approach in Egypt at the start of next week, tourists visiting the country have been told to take extra care. Political rallies, marches and clashes are likely in the coming days, western governments warn.

“There will be heavy security in place on polling days,” the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in new travel advice. “Take extra care near polling stations, avoiding them where possible. You should avoid all rallies and marches.”

Deaths and injuries have occurred, mostly in Cairo and Alexandria, over the past year as Egypt’s military and political leaders try to assert control. On May 17, explosives were thrown into a crowd at a rally in Cairo, injuring a number of people. In January, tourists were arrested near polling stations during a referendum.
