New strike threat at Lufthansa as flights resume

Crew may strike “every four days […] or every three weeks”

Lufthansa’s cabin crew union UFO has threatened to implement further strikes if mediation talks scheduled to start on Wednesday fail. The formal mediation talks were agreed when the airline offered permanent contracts to some temporary cabin crew. If the talks do not satisfy the union, cabin crew may strike “every four days, or two weeks, or every three weeks”, union chief Nicoley Baublies says in today’s issue of the German magazine Focus.
It is not only the airline that has financial reserves to survive damaging strikes. The union has 20 years of membership fees to fund a new wave of strikes, Baublies says.
Lufthansa resumed flights on Friday after cancelling around half of its scheduled 1,800 flights due to that day’s one-day strike. The union wants a 5% pay increase for cabin crew as well as assurances on jobs.
